A ball valve is a shut off valve that controls the flow of a liquid or gas by means of a rotary ball having a bore. By rotating the ball a quarter turn (90 degrees) around its axis, the medium can flow through or is blocked. It is the most popular valve type to be used, lasting a long time with reliable sealing. They can easily clean themselves each time the ball rotates 90 degrees taking the crud off. It is easy to maintain and also easy to monitor. There are 4 different ball valve types, which are standard (threaded), hydraulic, flanged, and vented. Threaded ball types have up to 4 ports, which either will have a female or male thread attached to it. Hydraulic valve types are used for hydraulic and heating systems, since they can resist the high temperature of the heat from it. Flanged types connect to a piping system and are used for a higher flow rate, since they can handle the pressure. Vented types, with their 2 way ports, have the area in a closed position and then let the pressure release out of the outlet port. The difference between a standard port and full port design are: a standard port has a straight flow path but is restricted when the fluid goes through, the flow will have a pressure drop, the full port design is also a straight flow path but there is no reduction for the fluid to come through.
