Why choose sliding gate control valves over standard globe valves for your process applications?
Sliding Gate Control Valve compared to standard Globe Valves
The sliding gate control valve by Schubert & Salzer is a compact, light-weight and highly accurate control valve used to control liquids, vapour and gaseous media precisely, quickly and economically.

This article identifies the comparative advantages of the sliding gate control valves compared to standard globe-style valves. Read on to understand exactly why the sliding gate control valve is causing such a stir in process applications worldwide.
Compact Control Valve
The compact construction of sliding gate control valves mean reduced space requirements and easier installation & maintenance.
For example, a mid-range (DN150-6”) globe valve weighs approximately 150Kg. A sliding gate valve of the same nominal bore weighs only 14.2Kg. This huge reduction in weight and size makes installation and maintenance much easier and much more cost-effective.
The image below illustrates the size difference between a sliding gate control valve and a standard globe valve with the same nominal bore.
Control Valve with Variable KVS Values
It is either not possible or extremely difficult to alter the KVS value of a globe valve at all – it would usually require a completely new valve body.
However, with the sliding gate control valve, a simple exchange of the operating unit is all that is required to change the KVS value at any time. The sliding gate control valve has a possible range of KVS from 0.04 to 910.
Control Valve with extremely low leakage
With the sliding gate control valve, leakage rates are less than 0.0001% of the KVS value, due to the innovative design and self-lapping action of the moving disc. Read this article to understand how the sliding gate control valve prevents valve leakage in a steam application.
Control Valve with excellent leak tightness
Due to the pressure from the media acting against the sealing disc, the sliding gate control valve has excellent leak tightness even when temperatures are as high as 200°C – the sliding gate control valve uses a surface seal instead of an annular seal.
Control valve for reduced energy consumption
The sliding gate control valve has a very short stroke due to its innovative design – closure is transverse to the direction of flow and not against it, as it is with a standard globe valve. The short stroke requires very little actuation energy – the actuation force (the force required to move the sliding discs) is only 10% of that required to move the plunger/plug in an identical bore globe valve, at the same differential pressure. This permits the use of much smaller actuators, thus significantly reducing energy consumption and enabling savings on energy costs.
Control valve with optimal flow control
The sliding gate control valve avoids cavitation problems in the valve and will therefore allow silent, low-turbulence operation. The slotted discs on the sliding gate control valve actually act as a ‘flow straightener’. This means the damaging cavitation bubbles are located within 1-2 meters beyond the valve, where they cause no harm when they collapse. This is unique to the Sliding gate control valve – standard globe valves will usually suffer from cavitation damage in applications with turbulent media.
